We report the development of an user-friendly information and report writer system for Anatomic Pathology laboratories. It is a program for IBM-PC compatible microcomputers, with files, screen entry forms and reports for patient identification, autopsy, biopsy and cytology exams. The user interface is menu- and window-oriented, in order to facilitate on-line interaction and user training. Coding of pathology reports using the SNOMED 4-axial procedure (topography, morphology, etiology and disease) is achieved through semi-automated, computer-assisted user interaction with SNOMED coding lists. One of the modules permits statistical analyses and selective listing of stored records, thus making it suitable for academic research. Care with implementation issues and the overall ergonomic design of the system were important factors in its success with the target users.
